Don’t Tell Me I’m Free

Don’t tell me I’m free
As time spins reverse
And just being a woman
Feels like a curse

Don’t tell me I’m free
When I have fewer rights
Than generations before
Who put up brave fights

Don’t tell me I’m free
When my body’s in chains
And my soul is on fire
And you’re fanning the flames

Don’t tell me I’m free
To walk with the shame
Of all of your hatred
And all of your blame

Don’t tell me I’m free
Then tell me to work
For half of the pay
And none of the support

Don’t tell me I’m free
When the American dream
Can no longer silence
The rage of my scream

Don’t tell me I’m free
While babies are crying
They’re hungry and hurt
And mothers keep dying

Don’t tell me I’m free
When the price is too high
To send children to school
They go broke or they die

Don’t tell me I’m free
When the freedom that’s won
Does not go to my daughters
But only my son

Don’t tell me I’m free
And then tell my children
They’re only free
If their true selves are hidden

Don’t tell me I’m free
While you hold in your hand
The freedom you claim
Extends to this land

Don’t tell me I’m free
When others are not
Our friends are not safe
Our children are shot

Don’t tell me I’m free
When the future looks bleak
For these babies I’m raising
For the freedoms they seek

Don’t tell me I’m free
To sing with pride and cheer
Only the words
That you want to hear

Don’t tell me I’m free
As long as I consent
To follow your rules
And never dissent

Don’t tell me I’m free
While I’m screaming inside
And what I feel for this country
Is so far from pride

Don’t tell me I’m free
When the only freedom that’s true
Is a freedom that’s shared
By me, them, and you

Don’t tell me to wave
The red, white and blue
When the freedom you offer
Is one that’s not true

Don’t tell me I’m free
When we can do better
Our nation’s strength comes
When we're all free together

  1. Amen. We have regressed greatly as a country. It’s beyond sad. I teach my students to learn from history and be better. How is this happening? I respect you! As a wonderful woman, mom, and friend. You are not alone!
